Short answer: For everyday life, all three are good enough, and the free versions are a fine place to start. Pick ChatGPT if you want the most all-round app with lots of features, Claude if you mostly write, think things through or work with long documents, and Gemini if you live in Google's world of Gmail, Docs, Android and Maps. The best one is usually the one that fits the tools you already use.

What they have in common

ChatGPT (by OpenAI), Claude (by Anthropic) and Gemini (by Google) can all:

  • answer questions and explain things in plain language
  • help you write and rewrite emails, messages and documents
  • summarize long texts and files you upload
  • read photos and screenshots
  • search the web for current information
  • work on a phone app as well as in a browser

All three have a free version and a paid plan that costs roughly $20 a month in the U.S., with cheaper and more expensive tiers around it. Prices and limits change often and differ by country, so check the official pricing pages linked below before you pay.

ChatGPT: the all-rounder

ChatGPT is the most widely used assistant, and it shows in the breadth of features.

  • Good at: quick everyday questions, brainstorming, image creation, voice conversations, and remembering things about you across chats if you turn memory on.
  • Nice touches: a large ecosystem of add-ons and custom assistants, and apps on almost every device.
  • Watch out for: the free tier has usage limits on the most capable models, and the sheer number of options can feel busy.

Claude: the careful writer

Claude is often the favorite of people who write a lot or want a thoughtful, less pushy conversation partner.

  • Good at: writing and editing in a natural tone, working through long documents and PDFs, explaining reasoning step by step, and being upfront when it is unsure.
  • Nice touches: projects that keep related files and instructions together, and a calm style that many people find easier to read.
  • Watch out for: fewer extras such as image generation, and free-tier message limits can run out quickly on long conversations.

Gemini: the Google insider

Gemini is built into Google's products, which is its biggest advantage.

  • Good at: working with your Gmail, Google Docs, Drive, Calendar and Maps (when you allow it), quick facts backed by Google Search, and Android phone integration.
  • Nice touches: paid Google plans often bundle extra cloud storage, which can make the subscription feel like better value.
  • Watch out for: the experience depends heavily on how much of your life is in Google's apps, and privacy settings live in your Google account's activity controls.

Which one for which task?

  • Writing an important email or cover letter: Claude or ChatGPT.
  • Planning a trip: Gemini (Maps and Search) or ChatGPT.
  • Making sense of a long contract or report: Claude.
  • Creating images: ChatGPT or Gemini.
  • Talking out loud while cooking or driving: ChatGPT or Gemini voice modes.
  • Finding something in your own emails: Gemini, if you use Gmail.
  • Homework help and explanations: any of the three; ask it to explain step by step and check the facts.

Privacy: check one setting in each

All three companies may use conversations to improve their models depending on your plan and settings. Each app has a setting to opt out of training and options to delete your history. See how to delete or export your AI chat history and what happens to what you type.

How to choose in ten minutes

  1. Pick one real task you do every week, such as replying to a tricky email.
  2. Give the exact same request to all three free versions.
  3. Keep the one whose answer you would actually use with the fewest edits.
  4. Only pay once you hit the free limits regularly.

There is no prize for loyalty. Many people use two: one as their main assistant and another for a second opinion, which is also a good way to catch AI mistakes.

Features and prices as of October 2026; all three products change frequently. Dear my is independent and not affiliated with OpenAI, Anthropic or Google.

      @jtorres88

Yes @jtorres88, same issue happened to me only, in middle of long chat. Now I start new chat for each task and paste short summary. Kindly check this article also, it explains why it forgets: /articles/why-does-ai-forget-what-you-told-it 🙏

Sure look, I use whatever the young lad left open on the phone. But I'll say Gemini is grand for finding that email I swore I never got, since it's all in the Gmail already. Yer man at work swears by Claude for writing his letters, says it sounds less pushy. I can't tell the difference meself, they all tell me I'm right anyway.
