Short answer: ChatGPT is safe to use for everyday questions, but it is not private in the way a diary or an encrypted messenger is. Your conversations are stored on OpenAI's servers, can be used to improve its models unless you switch that off, and can be read by OpenAI staff in limited cases or handed over if a court requires it. The rule of thumb: do not type anything you would be upset to see leak.
Where your conversations go
When you send a message, it travels to OpenAI's servers, where the model reads it and writes a reply. The conversation is then saved to your chat history so you can come back to it.
The connection is encrypted in transit, and OpenAI says data is encrypted at rest on its servers. That protects you against someone snooping on your Wi-Fi or stealing a hard drive. It is not end-to-end encryption: OpenAI itself can access the content, because the AI has to read your words to answer them.
Does ChatGPT learn from your chats?
By default, conversations from personal ChatGPT accounts may be used to train and improve OpenAI's models. You can turn this off:
Settings → Data Controls → Improve the model for everyone → off.
Your chats stay in your history, but OpenAI says they will no longer be used for training. The setting applies to your whole account, on every device.
Business, Enterprise and education plans work differently: OpenAI says it does not train on those customers' data by default.
Can a human read my chats?
In limited situations, yes. Like most online services, OpenAI may review conversations to investigate abuse, enforce its rules or handle safety issues. There is no person reading along as you type, but you should assume your chats are not sealed off from the company.
What happens when you delete a chat?
When you delete a conversation, it disappears from your history right away and, according to OpenAI, is removed from its systems within about 30 days, unless it has to be kept for security or legal reasons.
That legal exception is real. In 2025, a court in the copyright case brought by The New York Times ordered OpenAI to preserve users' chats, including deleted ones. That order was lifted in October 2025, so OpenAI generally went back to deleting chats on schedule. Logs already preserved remained, and chats tied to specific accounts flagged in the case were still kept. The lesson is less about this one case and more about the principle: anything stored on a company's servers can, in some circumstances, be kept longer than you expected.
Five settings worth checking today
- Turn off model training if you do not want your chats used to improve the AI (Settings → Data Controls).
- Use Temporary Chat for anything sensitive. Temporary chats do not appear in your history, do not create memories and are not used for training. OpenAI says they are deleted from its systems after 30 days.
- Review Memory. ChatGPT can remember facts about you across conversations. Look at what it has saved (Settings → Personalization) and delete anything you would rather it forget, or turn memory off.
- Turn on multi-factor authentication (Settings → Security). The most common way people lose private chats is not a hack of OpenAI; it is someone getting into their account.
- Check connected apps. If you have linked ChatGPT to email, cloud storage or other services, review what it can access and remove what you do not use.
What not to type into any chatbot
This applies to ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, companion apps and every other AI service:
- passwords, PINs, recovery codes or full card numbers
- your Social Security number or other government ID numbers
- detailed medical records or test results with your name on them
- confidential work documents, client data or anything under an NDA
- private information about other people who did not agree to share it
If you want help with a sensitive document, remove names, numbers and identifying details first. The AI can usually help just as well without them.
So, is it safe?
For drafting emails, learning something new, planning a trip or talking through an idea, yes. Treat it like a helpful service run by a company, not a private notebook. Adjust the settings above once, keep truly sensitive details out, and you get most of the benefit with far less risk.
