Short answer: On October 27, 2026, OpenAI added iCloud Mail and iCloud Calendar plugins to ChatGPT. If your email ends in @icloud.com, @me.com or @mac.com, or your calendar lives in iCloud, you can now ask ChatGPT to find an email, catch you up on your inbox, check what is next on your schedule or update an event. The plugins are available on all ChatGPT plans, including Free, on the web, the desktop app and iOS. You connect them with a special Apple app-specific password, never with your regular Apple password.
What happened
ChatGPT has worked with Gmail, Google Calendar and Outlook for some time through what OpenAI now calls plugins. People who keep their mail and calendar with Apple were left out. On October 27, OpenAI's release notes announced that iCloud users can now connect Mail and Calendar to ChatGPT "to find emails, catch up on your inbox, check your schedule, and update calendar events."
According to OpenAI's help pages and MacRumors' report, the launch includes:
- iCloud Mail. ChatGPT can search and read your iCloud Mail. MacRumors reports it can also manage messages and drafts and send email.
- iCloud Calendar. ChatGPT can read, schedule and update events, including the ones you see in the Calendar app on your iPhone.
- Contact lookup. Both plugins include read-only lookup of your iCloud contacts, so you can say "email Anna" instead of typing her address. Standalone Contacts and Reminders plugins are not part of this launch.
- All plans. OpenAI says the plugins are rolling out globally to all ChatGPT plans on the web, desktop and iOS.
One detail is easy to miss: the plugin sees only your iCloud account. If you read Gmail or Outlook inside Apple's Mail app on your iPhone, those accounts are not included. You would connect them through their own plugins.
Why it matters
For many iPhone users, iCloud is where daily life is organized: doctor's appointments, school events, flight confirmations, the email from the landlord. Until now, getting help from ChatGPT with any of that meant copying and pasting. Now you can ask in plain language, for example "What do I have on Thursday?", "Find the email with my booking reference" or "Move my dentist appointment to next week", and let the assistant do the looking.
This is especially useful for people outside the United States. Apple's own new assistant, Siri AI, is not available on iPhone in the European Union, as we covered when iOS 27.2 came out. The iCloud plugins for ChatGPT are rolling out globally, so European iCloud users get a way to use an AI assistant with their own mail and calendar.
The trade-off is the usual one with any assistant that can open your inbox: it becomes more helpful the more you let it see. The good news is that the setup was designed with a few safety brakes, which are worth knowing about.
What it means for you
- You need two-factor authentication on your Apple Account. Apple only lets you create app-specific passwords when two-factor authentication is on.
- You create a separate password just for ChatGPT. Apple's app-specific passwords are made for apps from other developers, so your main Apple password is never stored or collected by the app. OpenAI's help page is explicit: do not use your regular Apple password and do not paste a password into the chat.
- Mail and Calendar connect separately. For Mail, you enter your iCloud Mail address. For Calendar, you enter your primary Apple Account email, which may be a different address. Connecting one does not connect the other.
- You choose when ChatGPT asks first. In ChatGPT's app permission settings you can pick options such as "Always ask", "Allow read actions" or "Allow low-risk actions". OpenAI notes that sensitive actions may still require your approval.
- Disconnecting has two steps. Disconnecting iCloud in ChatGPT does not revoke the password at Apple. OpenAI's help page says to revoke it separately in your Apple Account.
How to set it up, step by step
- Sign in at account.apple.com, open Sign-In and Security, select App-Specific Passwords, choose Generate an app-specific password and follow the steps on screen.
- In ChatGPT, open Settings, then Plugins, and select iCloud Mail or iCloud Calendar.
- Select Install plugin, then Connect, and fill in the connection form: your iCloud Mail address (for Mail) or your primary Apple Account email (for Calendar), plus the app-specific password.
- Repeat for the second service if you want both.
- In a conversation, mention the plugin with @ or pick it from the + menu, and ask what you need.
Quick checklist before you connect
- Decide how much you want ChatGPT to do on its own. "Always ask" is the calmest place to start, and you can loosen it later.
- Read any draft before ChatGPT sends it, and check dates and times before it changes an event.
- Remember that if Memory is on, ChatGPT may remember relevant information it read from a connected app. Review your memories now and then.
- Check your data settings. OpenAI says that for Free, Go, Plus and Pro users, information accessed from apps may be used to train its models if "Improve the model for everyone" is on. You can switch that setting off.
- If you change or reset your main Apple password, all your app-specific passwords are revoked automatically, so you will need to create a new one and reconnect.
- Keep very sensitive messages, such as bank or health emails, in mind. If that feels like too much access, you can simply not connect Mail and use only Calendar.
Frequently asked questions
Do I have to pay for this? No. OpenAI says the plugins are available on all ChatGPT plans, including Free. App use may count toward your plan's usual limits.
Does it work on Android? OpenAI lists the web, the desktop app and iOS. On an Android phone you can use it through chatgpt.com in a browser.
Can ChatGPT see my Gmail through the iCloud plugin? No. The iCloud Mail plugin only covers iCloud addresses. Gmail and Outlook have their own plugins.
Does ChatGPT learn my Apple password? No. You give it an app-specific password, which Apple designed for exactly this case. You can revoke it at any time, and Apple lets you have up to 25 active ones.
How do I stop it later? Disconnect the plugin in Settings, then Plugins, and revoke the app-specific password at account.apple.com.
