50 AI agents played Minecraft and built a bureaucracy

Short answer: Y Combinator's research team, YC Labs, and the startup Olam Labs let large groups of AI agents share Minecraft worlds for hours. Fifty agents told to "build a thriving civilization" invented permits, ledgers, food rations and job titles, and in team games two AI teams worked together in very different ways. It's a research experiment with open-source tools, not a product.

What happened

In a write-up called "Agents in Games," published in late October 2026, YC Labs describes three experiments run with Olam Labs, which builds multi-agent environments for AI labs.

In the first, called Civ50, 50 GPT-6.1 Sol agents spent three hours in a survival Minecraft world with one goal: "Build a thriving civilization." According to YC Labs, they sent about 5,900 messages. Nobody held a vote, but 46 of the other 49 agents sent their first message to Ada, the first name in the agent directory, and she became the de facto leader. After a rough first night (22 of the run's 34 deaths happened then), the colony turned careful and organized. Agents set up a food ledger, a fishing rota with shifts, cooks and couriers, and roles like "hub steward." YC Labs' favorite detail: four agents spent 11 minutes appointing a "sole fertilizer operator" for a single piece of bone meal. When a cooked chicken tossed to one agent was eaten by another, they agreed on a new rule: food goes into named chests, never tossed.

Then the team pitted 10 Claude Opus 5.5 agents against 10 GPT-6.1 Sol agents in nine games of Bed Wars, a Minecraft team mode. GPT won the series 6–3, YC Labs reports, usually by breaking Claude's bed in the final minutes, while the Claude team played defensively and tried to win on kills. In the factory-building game Mindustry, GPT-6.1 Sol in Codex beat Claude Opus 5.5 in Claude Code 6–1 over seven games. The GPT team messaged far more and even read the game's source code, while the Claude team kept one leader and wrote lessons into memory files.

Why people are talking about it

It reads like a comedy about office life. The post reached 419 points on Hacker News, Tom's Hardware covered it on November 1, and it was on Techmeme's front page today. YC Labs itself notes that the colony's growing caution "felt similar to patterns seen while working with coding agents."

What it means if you use AI

  • Personality shows up in groups too. The same kind of model can behave very differently depending on how it's set up and who it's working with.
  • Clear roles and rules help. The agents did best once they had named chests, shifts and simple protocols, which is also good advice for anyone running several AI tools at once.
  • Keep it in proportion. These are single runs in two games, with different agent tools per team, so they say more about these setups than about which AI is "better."

Quick checklist

  • Read the original write-up for replays, chat logs and the agents' notes.
  • Developers can try the open-source Minecraft agent harness from YC on GitHub.
  • YC Labs says it has started a new 25-agent colony running GPT-6.1 Terra that you can follow live on Twitch.

If you gave 50 AI agents one goal, what would you ask them to build, and what rule do you think they'd invent first?
