Short answer
ChatGPT now has 1.2 billion weekly users, and by OpenAI's own count its volume of search-like questions is about 20% of Google's. Both figures come from Adam Fry, ChatGPT's consumer product lead, speaking at an OpenAI event in New York on November 2. They are company numbers, not independent measurements, but they show how quickly people have made "ask ChatGPT" part of everyday life.
What happened
At an OpenAI-hosted dinner in New York on Monday night, Fry sat down with Alex Kantrowitz of the Big Technology newsletter, which published the conversation on November 3. According to Fry:
- Weekly users went from 1 billion to 1.2 billion in about two months, which he described as roughly 100 million new people every 30 days.
- ChatGPT's search-like queries are roughly one-fifth of Google's query volume. OpenAI counts a search as any question that makes ChatGPT go and look things up on the web: "Every time you ask a question and go search the web, that's a search," Fry said.
- People create 1.5 billion images with ChatGPT every week.
- Voice is big too: dictation and spoken conversations together have 250 million weekly users.
Fry also said OpenAI plans to merge ChatGPT's Chat and Work modes, so the toggle at the top of the app should eventually go away. No date was given.
A few caveats are worth knowing. Fry did not say which Google figure he compared against, over what period, or for which regions (The Verge, Search Engine Journal). Search Engine Journal also points out that this measures questions asked, not visits sent to websites, which is a different metric.
Why people are talking about it
The story was picked up within hours by The Verge, Business Insider and Search Engine Journal, and spread widely on X, Reddit and Hacker News. The comparison that caught people's attention: The Verge notes that Bing had about 3% of the search market after more than a decade of trying, according to Microsoft's CEO in 2023. ChatGPT reached its share by OpenAI's count in roughly a year and a half of having live web search.
What it means if you use AI
- You are in very large company. Using an AI assistant for everyday questions, from a quick fact to planning a trip, is now mainstream rather than niche.
- Questions about people, places, health and money now trigger a web search, Fry said, because they need up-to-date answers. That's helpful, and it also makes it worth tapping the sources ChatGPT shows, especially for anything important.
- Voice is becoming a normal way to talk to AI. With 250 million weekly voice users, speaking to an assistant is no longer unusual.
Quick checklist
- When ChatGPT searches the web, open one or two of the linked sources for anything that matters.
- For health or money questions, treat the answer as a starting point and confirm it with a professional or an official source.
- Try voice mode or dictation if you've only typed so far; it's often faster on a phone.
- Watch for the Chat and Work modes merging into one in a future update.
